Product Certifications

The right BIS, WPC or telecom certificate — mapped, not guessed.

Nine regulators, eleven certification pathways, one team managing all of them. Whether your product is manufactured in India or imported, we identify exactly which scheme applies and carry it through to an issued certificate.

What “Product Certification” Covers

Any approval that certifies your physical product — not your company or your management system — before it can legally enter the Indian market. This spans electronics safety, wireless spectrum, energy efficiency, medical devices and telecom equipment.

Why Products Often Need More Than One

A Wi-Fi enabled smart appliance can simultaneously need BIS CRS (electrical safety), WPC ETA (wireless spectrum) and BEE registration (energy label) — three regulators, one product. We map every overlap before filing begins.

How Long It Realistically Takes

A single-scheme registration can clear in 4–8 weeks. Multi-scheme products, or those needing supplementary lab testing, more commonly run 2–4 months when sequenced correctly — far longer when handled ad hoc.

01

BIS CRS BIS · Scheme II

The Compulsory Registration Scheme for notified electronics and IT products — laptops, mobile phones, power banks, LED lighting, routers, monitors and 60+ other categories. Runs on self-declaration and lab test reports, with no mandatory factory inspection.

02

BIS ISI Domestic BIS · Scheme I

The classic ISI Mark, used for higher safety-stakes categories such as cement, steel, LPG cylinders and select electrical appliances manufactured within India. Involves a factory inspection plus ongoing quality-control surveillance audits, not just a one-time test report.

BIS ISI FMCD BIS · FMCS

The Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme — the ISI-equivalent pathway for factories located outside India. Requires an Authorised Indian Representative (AIR) and a factory audit conducted at your overseas facility rather than in India.

Scheme X BIS · OTR

The newer omnibus technical regulation pathway aimed primarily at the heavy industries sector. Rollout timelines have been extended in 2026, giving manufacturers additional runway — but early registration avoids the lab-capacity crunch expected closer to the compliance deadline.

BEE Registration BEE · Star Label

Energy-efficiency star labelling for appliances — from refrigerators and ACs to fans and pumps. Ratings run 1 to 5 stars, are periodically revised as efficiency benchmarks tighten, and split into mandatory and voluntary product lists (both handled below).

BEE — Mandatory Products BEE

The notified appliance categories — including room ACs, refrigerators, and select lighting — where star labelling is compulsory before sale, with no option to skip registration.

Categories not yet under mandatory star-labelling, where registering anyway gives a competitive, trust-building edge on energy performance claims ahead of the category becoming compulsory.

CDSCO Registration CDSCO

Medical device registration and import licensing under the Medical Device Rules. Devices are classified A through D by risk, which determines whether the pathway runs through a notified body or direct CDSCO review.

WPC/ETA Approval WPC · DoT

Equipment Type Approval for any device transmitting or receiving on de-licensed radio bands — Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RFID, IoT sensors. Requires an RF test report from an accredited lab and is generally valid for five years.

TEC Certification TEC · MTCTE

Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecommunication Equipment for anything connecting to India’s public telecom network — routers with SIM/cellular modules, gateways and network switches. Now formalised under the Telecommunications Act, 2023 framework.

STQC Certification STQC · MeitY

Conformity assessment from the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification Directorate, most often required for smart card readers, POS terminals and biometric devices — particularly where deployment touches banking or government infrastructure.

BIS CRS vs. ISI Domestic vs. ISI FMCD, side by side

How We Run It

The same disciplined process behind every certificate

Whether it’s a single BIS CRS filing or five schemes running in parallel, we follow the same sequence.

1

Scheme Mapping

We identify every certification scheme your product actually triggers, before any filing starts.

2

Documentation

Technical files, declarations and AIR paperwork are prepared to each regulator’s exact format.

3

Lab Testing

Testing is coordinated with NABL/ILAC-accredited labs matched to your product category.

4

Filing & Liaison

Applications are submitted and actively followed up with the regulator until issued.

5

Certificate & Renewal Tracking

Once issued, we track validity windows and standard revisions so nothing lapses unnoticed.

Quick Answers

Common questions about product certification

My product is wireless and electronic — do I need both BIS CRS and WPC ETA?

In most cases, yes. BIS CRS covers the product’s general electrical/electronic safety, while WPC ETA specifically covers the wireless radio module. They’re assessed by different regulators and filed separately, though we run them in parallel to save time.

How do I know if I need ISI Domestic or ISI FMCD?

It comes down to where the factory physically sits. If your manufacturing facility is inside India, it’s ISI Domestic (Scheme I). If it’s outside India, it’s the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCD/FMCS) — the same ISI mark, but audited abroad through an Authorised Indian Representative.

Is Scheme X mandatory for my product yet?

Scheme X currently targets the heavy industries sector specifically, with its rollout window extended into 2026. We’ll confirm whether your product category is in scope, and if not yet, when it’s expected to be.

Can BEE registration run alongside BIS CRS?

Yes — for appliance categories that need both, we file them as parallel tracks rather than sequentially, since they’re assessed by different bodies (BIS and BEE) using largely independent documentation.

What happens if I skip a certification my product actually needs?

Selling an uncertified notified product in India can lead to shipment holds at customs, market withdrawal, and penalties. It’s also the single biggest cause of delayed launches we see — products land in India only to discover a missing approval at the port.

Not sure which of these 11 pathways your product needs?

Share your product category and specs — we’ll map the exact combination of certifications, in writing, before any filing begins.
