What GeM Actually Is

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is India’s official online procurement platform. Ministries, PSUs, state departments and defense buyers use it to source everything from electronics to industrial equipment — one of the country’s largest and most consistent B2G demand channels.

Why It Matters for Overseas Brands

You don’t need an Indian manufacturing base to sell through GeM — you need an OEM listing and, usually, an authorized Indian reseller who can fulfil and deliver locally. Many of our clients start their India presence through GeM before setting up any local entity.

Certifications Still Apply

Listing on GeM never waives an underlying regulatory requirement. If your product category needs BIS, WPC or another certification to be sold in India at all, that approval has to be in place before or during onboarding.

Why Register on GeM

Four reasons brands prioritise GeM early

Direct Access to Public Buyers

No distributor tender relationships needed — departments discover and purchase directly from your GeM listing.

Standardised, Transparent Process

Pricing, specifications and buyer requirements are published upfront — less back-and-forth than traditional tendering.

Credibility Signal

An active GeM listing with a vendor assessment on file is often read as a trust signal by private B2B buyers too.

Steady, Recurring Demand

Government procurement runs on annual budget cycles — a well-managed listing generates repeat business, not one-off orders.

Quick Answers

Common questions about GeM & tender registration

Do I need an Indian company to register on GeM?

Not necessarily to register as an OEM, but you’ll typically need an Indian entity — your own or an appointed reseller’s — to actually fulfil and deliver orders, since GeM transactions are structured around Indian GST and banking rails.

What is the RITES vendor assessment, exactly?

It’s a mandatory third-party review of an OEM’s manufacturing capability, quality systems and financial standing, conducted through RITES Ltd, that GeM now requires before certain OEM listings are approved. We coordinate the assessment as part of OEM onboarding.

Can I register as both OEM and reseller?

Yes, though it’s uncommon. Most brands register once as OEM and appoint separate reseller entities, since the two roles carry different documentation and assessment requirements.

Does a GeM listing replace product certification requirements?

No. GeM listing and product certification (BIS, WPC, CDSCO, etc.) are entirely separate requirements — a product still needs whatever certification applies to it regardless of whether it’s sold via GeM or any other channel.

How long does OEM onboarding typically take?

It depends heavily on how quickly documentation is ready and how the RITES assessment scheduling falls — simple cases can clear in a few weeks, while first-time overseas OEMs with more extensive documentation reviews often take longer.
